What's Happening
2012 Sports Information
Living in a small remote town and region, we encounter many ideas, issues and barriers when conducting sport, recreation and leisure programs. However, if we can pool our resources and establish partnerships with other clubs, businesses and government organisations, there are great opportunities that exist from living amongst world class attractions and awe-inspiring landscape.Over the last 3 years, the Shire has developed a Recreation team who are now established within the town and have met the vast majority of sport, recreation and leisure clubs and touched on many and varied issues. More importantly, we are working on them day in, day out. Therefore if you or your club require any assistance in any area of operation eg. Meetings, agendas, membership, facilities, please do not hesitate to contact myself, Nick Allen, Club Development Officer or Wayne Richards, Manager of Recreation and Leisure.
Message from the East Kimberley Club Development Officer:
With 2012 now upon us I would like to take this opportunity to thank each and every club member, volunteer and official for their efforts in 2011. As a member of a number of different clubs in the East Kimberley I know how hard our sporting volunteers work. Without the tireless work of these volunteers our sporting clubs would not operate. I hope to see those same volunteers return in 2012 as well as other new members put up their hand to help spread the work load.
2012 is set to be a busy year with funding opportunities from a number of different organisations on offer, as Club Development Officer I am more than happy to assist clubs with the application process as well as assist sourcing funds. It would be great to see all East Kimberley clubs benefiting from an injection of funds. Remember that there are grants available for things such as club facilities, first aid and talent development.
After a visit from Ian Crawford from Candor Training who held a Club Development Workshop on Business Planning in late 2011 it would be fantastic to work closely with East Kimberley clubs in 2012 to continue to develop existing plans or to help develop a new plan. A current Business Plan is essential for clubs when applying for funding, improving self governance and improving future membership numbers.
I am looking forward to a great year here in the East Kimberley and looking forward to supporting all sporting clubs and organisations. Please don't hesitate to contact me if there is any information, help or advice concerning your sporting club.
Recreation news:
- The East Kimberley Cricket Association has completed work on the two new practice nets located at the Kununurra Town Oval. The project was supported by the Shire of Wyndham East Kimberley and the Department of Sport & Recreation.
- The 2012 Club Profiles will soon be posted and emailed to relevant committee members, the profile is about helping clubs identify areas that may need work and then planning to take positive steps to address those concerns with continued support from the Club Development Officer.
- Assistance with committee procedures, management practices, grant applications and sourcing funding is available through the Club Development Officer.
- Issues regarding State Sporting Associations have been discussed heavily this year with the Department of Sport and Recreation. Contact the Club Development Officer if you require individual club assistance.
- A clubs page on the SWEK Website is up and running and is available to clubs should they wish to load content or promote their activity. Please contact the Club Development Officer to discuss further.
SWEK Annual Grants
The current Shire Annual Grant round is to close at the end of May and September. Many of the clubs within the Shire have been working hard on these applications for a range of projects including: developing club grounds, improving facilities and increasing the quality of service to community members. The purpose of an annual grant is to effectively and consistently deal with a variety of large requests for funding that Council receives.
Well done to all of the hard working clubs who continue to provide so much for the community and their families.

Club Development Project
Take a moment to think back to when you were little. What did you love to do?
Chances are it involved playing games, chatting with friends and spending time learning and developing your skills. Recreational and sports clubs provide these things and so much more.
The value of club involvement and activity cannot be underestimated. Clubs conducting sports, hobbies and other activities facilitate physical and emotional wellbeing within us. Drawn together by common interests, our clubs can promote long lasting friendships and a fantastic social atmosphere for old and new members of any community. Once involved, clubs help us to improve life skills like cooperating within a team, communication, empathy, networking and motivation.
The Shire of Wyndham East Kimberley contains many clubs that vary greatly in their activities and focus. The Club Development Project is a partnership between the Shire of Wyndham East Kimberley, Shire of Halls Creek and the Department of Sport and Recreation (DSR). The project aims to build the capacity of community based clubs through a Club Development Officer. The Club Development Officer forms part of a state wide network that will assist, support and develop community based sport and recreation clubs through education, facilitation and communication.
Many good people come together to organise clubs for the community but face pressures of little help or reward. The Club Development Project stretching over two Shires, Wyndham East Kimberley and Halls Creek aims to help support and strengthen clubs and to overcome some of the hassles they face each year.
If you are currently involved in running a club of any kind in the community and need some assistance, please contact Nick Allen or Wayne Richards at the Shire of Wyndham East Kimberley on 9168 4100.
