Recycling

There are many ways in which residents can participate in recycling.

Currently residents are being encouraged to recycle mobile phones, aluminium cans, oil, vehicle batteries, garden and food waste, chemical drums, steel, printer cartridges, clothes and other household items.

Green waste is recycled into mulch at the Landfill site and used to mulch Shire gardens. This is an effective means of reducing landfill and improving the presentation of Shire gardens through recycling.

Mulching at the Landfill Site is expected to produce more
than 100 cubic metres of mulch for use on Shire gardens.

Mulch for Sale at the Kununurra Landfill
The Shire now has excess mulch available for sale to the public. A charge of $30 per cubic meter (or standard box trailer) is applicable. Please visit the landfill site at Kununurra if you would like a trailer load of mulch.

Mobile Muster
Divert your old mobile phones from landfill. The Shire encourages people to bring all their old mobile phones, batteries and associated equipment in for recycling. A mobile muster box is located inside the entrance of the Shire office in Kununurra and Wyndham.

Composting
The Shire of Wyndham East Kimberley has introduced a subsidised compost bin program. The program aims to encourage and promote the composting of food and garden waste in the home. Bins and information on how to compost have been made available at the local hardware stores. For more information contact Katya Tripp the Environmental Officer at the Shire. To purchase a bin contact HOME Hardware (ground bins only) or Mitre 10 (bins and tumblers) in Kununurra.

Rubbish Collection

The Shire provides a weekly rubbish collection service to residents and commercial and industrial operators.

The current collection timetable is as follows:

Monday - Lakeside and Mirima

Tuesday - Light Industrial area

Wednesday - KNX Residential and Hidden Valley

Thursday - Wyndham

Friday - Light Industrial area

Daily - Special customers and Town public bins

The Shire operates two  refuse landfill sites - one at Wyndham and one at Kununurra. We are currently in the process of upgrading these facilities.
