Safety Around Schools

Posted on: Wednesday, 17 May 2017 at 2:40:25 PM

School zones are often busy during the morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up times and children are sometimes put at risk. With the start of each school year and during each term it’s important to reinforce road safety messages around school zones to help reduce congestion at the school gate and improve road safety for students.

The Shire of Wyndham East Kimberley in partnership with local schools is working to improve parking, traffic flow and congestion around school zones.

We’d like to remind drivers of the following:

  1. Follow directions of all signs including, No Standing, No parking, Disabled Parking, Clearways and Loading Zones.
  2. The driver of a vehicle shall not stop so that any portion of the vehicle is on a path, traffic island or median strip.

The Shire has created a “Safety around Schools” fact sheet, outlining the requirements in relation to parking within the Shire.  This fact sheet will be distributed publicly and is available on the Shire’s Website.

Accompanying the education phase is also enforcement from the Shire Rangers and local Police. Shire Rangers will be conducting patrols of Schools, issuing warning notices, and reminding people of the need for safety around schools.
