Fight the Bite: Clean up your backyard

Posted on: Thursday, 12 October 2017 at 1:23:13 PM

The Shire is working to manage mosquitoes in the towns of Wyndham and Kununurra, but we need your help.

Did you know that mosquitoes can breed in any standing water, even small amounts in your back yard? Mosquitoes are often found breeding in containers such as buckets, tyres, and even pot plant drip trays. These “container-breeding” mosquitoes can be a serious nuisance as well as spread diseases, and if breeding near your home don’t need to go far in search of a meal.

Take advantage of the 2017 Great Northern Clean Up this weekend, October 14-15 and dispose of rubbish (old tyres, old cans, bottles) that holds or collects water. Kununurra and Wyndham Landfill sites will be accepting domestic waste free of charge. Please note: any industrial and/or commercial waste will be charged at normal rates.

Landfill hours will remain the unchanged over the weekend:

Kununurra Landfill

Saturday         8am to 3pm

Sunday            8am to 2pm

Wyndham Landfill

Saturday         8am to 12 noon

Sunday           8am to 12 noon

Fight the Bite:

  • Cover Up – wear long, loose fitting, light coloured clothing.
  • Repel – use insect repellent containing DEET (diethyltoluamide) or picaridin.
  • Clean Up – stop mosquitoes breeding in water pooling around your home by emptying water from containers.
