A CONFIRMED estuarine (saltwater) crocodile has been reported in the Lake Kununurra crocodile control zone which extends along the Ord River from the Lake Argyle dam wall to the diversion dam at Lake Kununurra. A crocodile 1.5m - 2m was sighted approximately 600m upstream of the entrance to Lilly Creek lagoon on Saturday 23 March 2024.

The local government has received an application for a proposed telecommunication infrastructure (tower) at Lot 530 Research Station Road, Kununurra, and public comments are invited.

Public are advised to discontinue recreational activities at Lily Creek Lagoon for at least a week, until the Shire’s Environmental Health Services have confirmed that water quality has returned to acceptable levels and health warning signs are removed. There have been multiple wastewater overflows experienced in Kununurra over the last few days following ~ 275mm in Kununurra in March to date with further rainfall forecast.

The Shire of Wyndham East Kimberley is urging residents and travellers within the region to take extra precautions to avoid mosquito bites over the coming weeks, to prevent mosquito-borne disease transmission.

The next phase of construction will focus on completing the Tickalara Creek and Frog Hollow Creek replacement bridges, with work scheduled to recommence on 18th March 2024. These final stages will involve the construction of approach slabs, embankment earthworks, and the installation of road safety barriers. Anticipated completion for both bridges is set for mid-June 2024.

Wet Season heavy rains has contributed to the increases in mosquitoes throughout the Shire. In Western Australia, mosquitoes can transmit Ross River virus, Barmah Forest virus and Kunjin virus, as well as the potentially fatal Murray Valley encephalitis and Japanese encephalitis viruses (JEV).

The damage sustained by the Wyndham Boat Ramp Jetty pontoons has been assessed, and we are pleased to announce that our insurers have accepted the damage claim. We are committed to swiftly addressing this issue to ensure the safety and functionality of the jetty for our community and visitors.

Following an inspection conducted on Wednesday 31 January, Shire staff, with the assistance of CGL, have been actively working on a comprehensive plan to address the damage sustained by the pontoon's far end. Key updates on the repair progress include:

The Shire of Wyndham East Kimberley proposes to dispose (lease) of the above property to Joshua Melville, trading as Gourmet Camp Oven Experience, for a period of 10 years for the purpose of an Outdoor Dining Experience.

Over the weekend, Saturday 27 January 2024, the Wyndham Boat Ramp Ponton sustained damage and capsized. Consequently, the Wyndham Pontoon is temporarily closed to public access.  Shire staff attended the site Sunday 28 January to undertake immediate emergency works, in order to stabilise the structure as best as practicable, to reduce (if possible) further damage to the jetty. A detailed inspection will be progressed by Shire Staff against previous maintenance and asset inspections (2023), to determine if repairs are possible and claimable under insurance.

The Shire’s Local Planning Strategy (the Strategy) and Local Planning Scheme No. 9 (the Scheme) are the guiding tools for planning assessment in the Shire. The Strategy provides long-term planning directions and actions to manage land use change and development, and the Scheme sets out the way land is to be used and developed and classifies areas for land use.

The Natural Disaster Impact and Community Resilience Study has been prepared to determine measures – social, infrastructure, and services – that can be taken in the Shire, to develop resilient communities that are better prepared to respond to and recover from, the impact of natural disasters. It has been prepared following extensive consultation with key stakeholders as well as an analysis of cost benefits It is made up of an Executive Summary and a draft final report.

Water Corporation is still working on repairs at the Wyndham Water Treatment Plant. To help maintain supply while these repairs are carried out, they are asking the community to reduce your water use where you can. Please limit outdoor use such as irrigation and car washing until further notice.

Poor food handling can cause outbreaks of foodborne illnesses, which can result in avoidable hospitalisations, loss of revenue and reputational damage to food businesses.
