Proposal to recognise indigenous name for unnamed crossing

Published on Thursday, 11 January 2018 at 12:00:00 AM

The Shire of Wyndham East Kimberley has received a request from the MG Corporation to recognise the indigenous name for the location of an unnamed crossing, currently signposted as “Philchowski’s Crossing”, to be known as Galboorrang Crossing.

The reasons for the proposed name change are:

  • The current signpost identifying the crossing as “Philchowski’s Crossing” is offensive to the traditional owners of MG country.
  • To enable Miriwoong people to reconnect with their language and culture, and help preserve indigenous knowledge by establishing indigenous place names in common use.
  • To highlight the cultural richness of our region for tourists passing through.

Further information explaining the proposal and submission forms have been made available at the Shire of Wyndham East Kimberley Administration Offices, located at 20 Coolibah Drive Kununurra and Koolama Street Wyndham, and on the Shire’s website up to and including Friday 9 February 2018.

Submissions on the proposed name change may be lodged in writing with the undersigned on or before Friday 9 February 2018.
