Kununurra Leisure Centre Pool Closure Update

The Shire of Wyndham East Kimberley wishes to advise on an update of the pool. Expert contractors have assessed the pool liner damage and have advised that a split in the liner has allowed water to gather between the concrete pool shell and the liner material. This has caused a lift along the edges, much like a pillow, making the pool unsafe for swimming. As a result, the Shire has closed the pool and begun de-watering it in preparation for the repairs.

The contractors have expertise in vinyl welding and propose to repair the liner and reinstate it over the next week once the pool is empty. The Shire is hopeful the pool will open again for swimming in approximately 3 weeks. However, the extent of the damage under the liner will not be known until the pool is fully de-watered. The weather may also delay progress. The Shire is working as quickly as possible to ensure the facility is available to swimmers. We will endeavour to advise once it is available for use again.

All aquatic and gold memberships will remain on hold until the pool is operational. If you have any further inquiries regarding your membership, please call the Kununurra Leisure Centre on 08 9168 2120.

The Shire wishes to apologise for the inconvenience caused and appreciate your patience.

Temporary solution for Swimmers

In place of the main pool's closure at the Kununurra Leisure Centre, the Shire will provide some alternative swimming locations for community members participating in Swim Club and the Argyle Swim.
Transport for the Kununurra Croc Swim Club will be provided on Saturday morning, beginning Saturday, 13 March 2021, to the Wyndham swimming pool. Members are urged to contact the Swim Club directly for departure times and information.
Transport will also be provided to Lake Argyle on Sundays. The bus will depart from the Kununurra Leisure Centre at 6 am and return to Kununurra by 10 am. This will commence on Sunday, 14 March 2021. Swimmers are advised to be cautious and to swim at their own risk. For community members who wish to utilise this service, please contact the Kununurra Leisure Centre on (08) 9168 2120. Limited seats are available, so please ensure you register early.
Both of these temporary arrangements will remain in place until the main pool is reopened.
The Shire is also looking at providing marker buoys that will emulate lane ropes at Kununurra Swim Beach. We are currently investigating this feasibility with regulators, although swimmers are free to use Swim Beach for training purposes.
