The Shire of Wyndham East Kimberley has been awarded $7.5 million in BBRF (Building Better Regions Funding) grant funding for the first stage of the East Kimberley Regional Airport (EKRA) infrastructure upgrade.
Shire President David Menzel said he was thrilled with the outcome.
"This is great news for our region. Receiving this funding to upgrade and increase the capacity of our airport infrastructure will be beneficial to our region and local economy. It will provide additional jobs and assist multiple industries." said President Menzel.
"This project will protect the current infrastructure and ensure the taxiways and apron are up to standard for the larger aircraft we are now handling at the airport."
"Thank you to the Councillors who supported funding the work required to get this and future stages of the upgrade shovel ready, and to the great team of staff who contributed to ensuring this project attracted the funding,"
"A big thank you also the Federal Member of Durak, Hon. Minister Melissa Price MP, who has been a strong advocate for this project."
Stage One of the EKRA infrastructure upgrade will include increasing the pavement strength on three taxiways and three aprons as well as constructing a new apron and associated infrastructure.
Ms Price announced the successful projects earlier today for her electorate. The Shire was one of eleven projects that were approved to receive the BBRF grant.
