Signage Types

Street Name sign: (white background with black lettering) shows name and the Shire logo.

Tourist sign: (brown background with white lettering) guides travellers to recognised tourist attractions and approved tourist services. Examples are:

  • Tourist features which are generally of a non-commercial nature and include scenic lookouts, historical markers and geographical features.
  • Tourist attractions which may (or not) be commercially operated services and include monuments, craft centres and distilleries.

Community Facility sign: (blue background with white lettering) guides visitors and locals to community facilities, typically not-for-profit facilities, and business precincts. Examples are:

  • Government facilities (airport, police station, hospital);
  • Post Office;
  • Recreational grounds or facilities (ovals, boat ramps);
  • Educational institutions (school, library);
  • Public cultural facilities (gallery, museum);
  • Places of public worship;
  • Locations of regional significance (parks); and
  • Commercial and industrial precincts.

Service sign: (blue background with white symbol) uses symbols to guide motorists and road users to roadside stopping places, certain commercial services and community facilities. Examples include although are not limited to rest areas, restaurants and boat ramps.

Business Directional sign: (blue background with white lettering) guides visitors and locals to individual businesses.

Directional Signage

Directional signage helps road users locate community facilities, services, tourist attractions and precincts while maintaining clear and consistent wayfinding, road safety and visual amenity.

Under the Shire's POL-4008 Directional Signage Policy, directional signage within road reserves is primarily provided for:

  • community facilities and emergency services;
  • public infrastructure;
  • recognised tourist attractions and services;
  • commercial, tourism, industrial or community precincts; and
  • other approved wayfinding purposes.

New business-specific directional signage is no longer approved. In appropriate locations, precinct signage or generic service symbols may instead be used to assist road users to locate businesses and services.

In exceptional circumstances, the Shire may consider Exceptional Wayfinding Signage where there is a demonstrated road safety issue, or where a destination is in a remote location and reasonable wayfinding cannot otherwise be achieved. Any approval for Exceptional Wayfinding Signage is limited to a maximum period of five years.

Existing business-specific directional signs will be progressively reviewed as part of the Shire's signage rationalisation program. Existing signs may remain for a transition period of up to 24 months from commencement of the new policy, after which they will be removed unless approved as Exceptional Wayfinding Signage. Affected businesses will be consulted where practical.

Applications for new or replacement tourist attraction or tourist service signage may still be submitted to the Shire and will be assessed against the National Tourist Signing Eligibility Guidelines.

All other proposals for business advertising signage are separate from directional signage and must comply with the Shire's applicable planning requirements, local laws and policies.

Street Name Signs

The Shire of Wyndham East Kimberley installs and maintains street/road signs throughout the Shire. All street signs must adhere to Council specifications in accordance with The Australian Standards 1742.5-1997 - Manual of uniform traffic control devices part 5: Street name and community facility name signs.

  • Bill posting
  • Free standing signs (A-Frame)
  • Illuminated signs
  • Pennons (Flag signs)
  • Pylon signs
  • Wall panels
  • Veranda Signs
