Coronavirus Event Cancellation Media Release

Published on Thursday, 19 March 2020 at 3:56:14 PM

The Shire of Wyndham East Kimberley continues to take direction and advice from relevant State and Federal Government agencies during the ongoing global development of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic with respect to our preparedness and response.

In an effort to slow the spread of Coronavirus (COVID-19) in Australia the Federal Government has implemented new restrictions on gatherings:

  • Non-essential gatherings of more than 100 people indoors are no longer permitted.
  • Outdoor events of greater than 500 people are no longer permitted.

In accordance with advice received from the Department of Health, and Direction from the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet, the Shire is reviewing all event approvals, both approved and in progress.

Criteria for essential and nonessential events is described in more detail at this link: https://www.pm.gov.au/media/update-coronavirus-measures

Event applications will be reviewed in consistency with advice offered to us by the Department of Health, as well as recommendations from our Environmental Health Officers.

For those events which do not meet the cancellation criteria, event organisers will be required to produce a new certificate of insurance for their event(s). This is to ensure that the event(s) meets the required insurance levels given the rapid change in circumstances brought about by the pandemic.

The Shire can only approve an event in line with the advice received from the State and Federal Governments in relation to coronavirus measures.

Please contact the Shire via mail@swek.wa.gov.au or on (08) 9168 4100 if you need to discuss your event further.

As a local government, we are responsible for taking precautionary measures to minimise risks to health at public events and facilities in the face of this pandemic and we will continue to take the advice of State and Federal Agencies when making decisions which affect the community.
