Keep your pets safe and secure

The Kununurra Agricultural Show is happening this weekend, and we are looking forward to all the great food, activities and fireworks. Unfortunately, loud noises (particularly fireworks) can cause serious anxiety and stress for some animals. The Shire Rangers would like to remind pet owners to take extra precautions to create a safe and secure space for their pets.

The Shire Rangers have compiled a few tips to help ease your pets' fears:

  • Create a safe and secure space for your pets – before leaving for the Kununurra Ag Show, make sure to set up your pet in a safe, comfortable, calming space, like a bedroom or a crate. Keep windows, doors, and fences secure to prevent any potential escape and make sure your pet has a cosy bed and enough food and water to last throughout the night.
  • Tire your pet out - Be sure to take your dog out for an extra-long walk. The more tired a pet is, the calmer your animal will be and less bothered by the loud firework noises.
  • Create a distraction - If you're home when fireworks are going off, redirect your pet's attention by throwing their favourite ball or toy. Not only will you distract your pet, but you may help it associate the noise with something positive, like play and attention.
  • Soundproof your space - A little white noise can help block out the worst of the fireworks. Leave the television or radio on, or turn on a fan to help sound-sensitive pets get through the evening.
  • Ensure your pet is microchipped and registered – This will help us identify your pet quickly and return it to you should they escape. Ensure your pet is also wearing a collar or ID with current identifying information.

t's not uncommon for pets to be spooked by fireworks and try to escape. However, these steps should assist in keeping your pet safe and secure. For more information, please get in touch with the Shire Rangers on (08) 9168 4100.
