The Shire of Wyndham East Kimberley is advising residents and visitors to exercise caution following reports of dingoes displaying aggressive and concerning behaviour in areas along Victoria Highway, near Kununurra Airport and the Swim Beach turnoff.

Ranger Services received a report of an incident early this morning (28 October 2026), between 5:00am and 5:30am, involving a pedestrian walking along Victoria Highway opposite Kununurra Airport. A dingo reportedly approached and chased the pedestrian, causing her to seek safety at a nearby business.

A previous incident involving a dingo reportedly stalking a pedestrian near the intersection of Victoria Highway and Millington Drive (Swim Beach turnoff) was also reported.

What is the Shire doing?

In response to these incidents, Shire Ranger Services are implementing precautionary measures to reduce the risk to public safety, including:

  • Installing a variable message board to warn pedestrians and motorists of dingo activity in the area.
  • Increasing Ranger patrols and monitoring of affected locations.
  • Deploying a humane trap in an attempt to safely capture the dingo involved.

Community Safety Advice

Until the situation has been resolved, the Shire encourages residents and visitors to:

  • Avoid walking or jogging in the affected areas, particularly during early morning and evening hours.
  • Keep dogs on leads and under effective control at all times.
  • Do not approach, feed or attempt to interact with dingoes.
  • If approached by a dingo, remain calm, avoid running, face the animal and slowly back away to a safe location.
  • Report any sightings or concerning behaviour to Shire Ranger Services.

The Shire is treating these reports seriously and will continue to monitor the situation and take appropriate action to protect community safety.

Residents are encouraged to remain vigilant and report any further incidents to the Shire of Wyndham East Kimberley on (08) 9168 4100.
