On Monday 14 September 2020, Water Corporation and (Miriuwung Gajerrong) MG Corporation officially unveiled the new Ord River Diversion Dam viewing area.
The project took over six months to establish and was officially opened by the Water Corporation's General Manager, Barry Ford, and Executive Chair of MG Corporation, Lawford Benning.
The viewing area shows a spectacular view of the dam with interpretive signages that explains the history of the Ord River project in English and the native Miriwoong language.
The major upgrade works project also included further strengthening of the dam embankments, helping extend its lifespan, as well as renewing other infrastructure to ensure public safety at the site. Around 100 contractors worked on the project, which directly employed seven full-time staff, with $3.3 million spent with local firms in Kununurra.
Barry Ford congratulated everyone involved in the project including MG Corporation, Kununurra Historical Society, Mirama Dawang Woorlab-Gerring Language and Cultural Centre, Waringarri Art Centre and all the community members involved.
The Diversion Dam viewing area is now available for the public to use.
