Why we advocate
Advocacy is one of the ways the Shire of Wyndham East Kimberley works to create a stronger future for our region.
Many of the issues that affect daily life in the East Kimberley are outside the direct responsibility of local government. While the Shire may not deliver these services directly, we play an important role in bringing local priorities to the attention of State and Federal governments, funding bodies and decision-makers.
We advocate to secure investment, influence policy and advocate for projects and initiatives that support a connected, safe, sustainable and thriving East Kimberley.
How we advocate
The Shire uses a clear and evidence-based approach to advocacy.
We identify community needs and regional priorities, assess opportunities and work with stakeholders to build strong cases for investment and support.
Our advocacy may include:
- Working directly with State and Federal governments
- Coordinating regional advocacy campaigns
- Preparing business cases and investment proposals
- Making submissions and policy recommendations
- Connecting community concerns with the appropriate agencies and decision-makers

Community involvement
Strong advocacy is most effective when it is backed by community voices.
The Shire works alongside residents, businesses, Traditional Owners, industry and community organisations to advocate for the things that matter most to our region. Community support helps demonstrate local need, strengthens the case for investment and helps decision-makers understand the importance of these issues to the people who live here.
There are many ways the community can support advocacy efforts, including:
- Participating in community engagement and consultation
- Supporting advocacy campaigns and regional priorities
- Contacting elected representatives and decision-makers
- Sharing local stories, experiences and ideas
- Working collaboratively with the Shire and regional partners
Together, we can advocate for the investment, services and opportunities needed to support the long-term future of the East Kimberley.
Advocacy priorities
The Shire is currently developing its Advocacy Priorities and broader Advocacy Framework.
This work will identify the region’s highest priority advocacy projects and key community and policy issues requiring government attention and investment.
