The Shire of Wyndham East Kimberley were honoured to receive the original Gantry Crane, gifted by the Water Corporation, on Tuesday 2 September 2019.
The crane, which sat on top of the Kununurra Diversion Dam Bridge for more than 50 years, allowed Water Corporation to perform integral maintenance on the 20 aerial gates below.
The historic monument is now positioned on the corner of the Victoria Highway and Millington Drive, for all to admire and enjoy.
Shire President David Menzel has said “The crane played a big part in the history of Kununurra and the Ord River and we are very lucky to be able to reposition it as a memento for tourists and locals alike.”
Water Corporation’s North West Regional Manager Rino Trolio said “Water Corporation completed a $4.1 million project to replace the gantry crane in June 2019, with the new crane ensuring the ongoing operation of the Kununurra Diversion Dam for generations to come. Water Corporation is pleased the original gantry crane will continue to serve the community as a symbol of Kununurra’s great irrigation history.”
