NAIDOC Week 2018 – Because of Her we Can

NAIDOC Week celebrations are held across Australia each July to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. It is a great opportunity to participate in a range of activities and to support your local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community. The National NAIDOC theme for 2018 was ‘Because of her we Can’. Local organisations came together to celebrate NAIDOC Week 2018 in Kununurra.

The celebrations commenced Saturday 7 July with the NAIDOC Quiz Night at the Ord River Sports Club, Sunday 8 July Ord River Darts Club hosted the NAIDOC Week Darts Comp at the Ord River Sports Club and was a great success!

Monday 9 July was the NAIDOC Week Community Day which commenced with a flag raising ceremony at Kununurra Town Cenotaph and NAIDOC March to Whitegum Park.

There was fun for all with the Waringarri dancers, music workshops with Junkadelic, live entertainment, a water ceremony, community BBQ, pamper stalls, a photo booth, interactive and informative stalls from the local service providers and organisations and much more. Thank you for all who attended this great event, all of our local services and organisations, including the Water Corporation for donating water bottles.

The festivities continued throughout the week with these fantastic events:

Tuesday – Open day at Mirima Language Centre

Wednesday – Waringarri Arts culture evening, Save the Children Junior Ball

Thursday – Garnduwa Community Basketball comp, MG Corporation and KCLS Senior Ball

Friday – NAIDOC Week Partners stall at the Kununurra Ag show

A big thank you to all that made NAIDOC Week 2018 possible.
