Find out when your bins are collected, where to dispose of household waste and how to recycle in Kununurra and Wyndham.

Bin collection

The Shire provides a weekly rubbish collection service for residential and commercial properties.

Bin collection days

Public holidays: Bin collection days stay the same, including during the Christmas and New Year period.

Putting your bin out for collection

To make sure your bin is collected:

• Put your bin on the verge by 6 am on your collection day.
• Place it no more than 1 metre from the kerb, with the wheels facing your property.
• Make sure your Shire-issued collection sticker is visible.
• Keep your bin under 80 kg.
• Make sure vehicles and other objects do not block access to your bin.
• Check that your bin and wheels are not damaged.

Bins may not be collected if they are damaged, incorrectly positioned or do not have a valid collection sticker.

All bins must display a Shire-issued collection sticker to be emptied.

If your bin does not have a sticker, is damaged or you need an additional bin, contact the Shire on (08) 9168 4100.

Missed bin collection

If you miss your collection day, you can take your general household waste to the Kununurra or Wyndham landfill free of charge.

Recycling and reuse

Before throwing something away, consider whether it can be reused, donated or recycled. 

The Shire provides selected recycling services, while local businesses and community organisations offer additional recycling and reuse options.

Mobile phones – MobileMuster

The Shire is a registered MobileMuster collection point.

You can drop off unwanted mobile phones and accessories at the Shire administration offices in Kununurra and Wyndham.

Accepted items include:

• Mobile phones
• Mobile phone batteries
• Mobile phone chargers
• Mobile phone accessories, including cases and earphones

Other household batteries and electronic devices are not accepted through MobileMuster.

Computers and televisions – TechCollect

TechCollect provides free recycling for eligible electronic equipment from households and small businesses.

Accepted items include:

• Desktop and laptop computers
• Tablets and computer monitors
• Keyboards, mice and computer accessories
• Printers, scanners and fax machines
• Televisions

Before recycling computers or storage devices, securely delete your personal information. Data removal is your responsibility.

Other materials

Selected materials can also be separated for recovery or recycling at Shire landfill facilities, including green waste, scrap metal, oil and vehicle batteries.

Contact your local landfill to check which materials are accepted and whether fees apply.

Community recycling and reuse initiatives

The following services are provided by local organisations and are not operated by the Shire. Accepted items and opening hours may change, so check with the provider before visiting.

Revive – recycling and second-hand goods

Revive, operated by Job Pathways, provides recycling and reuse services in Kununurra.

Residents can donate reusable household goods and purchase second-hand items.

Revive also provides specialty recycling collection points for items such as:

• Toothbrushes and oral care packaging
• Shampoo, conditioner and hair care packaging
• Makeup and skincare containers
• Razors and shaving product packaging
• Pens, highlighters and other stationery
• Plastic bottle lids and bread tags
• Household batteries
• Selected cleaning and dishwashing product packaging
• Selected metal packaging

Containers for Change – drink container refunds

Containers for Change is a Western Australian recycling program that provides a 10-cent refund for eligible drink containers.

Residents can return eligible bottles, cans and cartons to a participating refund point or donate their refund to a registered community organisation.

Donating reusable household items

You can also consider donating clean, usable clothing, furniture and household items to local second-hand stores and community organisations.

These include:

• Revive
• Kununurra Neighbourhood House
• Local charity and community organisations that accept donations

Contact the organisation before dropping off donations to confirm what they can accept.

Landfill and waste disposal

The Shire operates landfill facilities in Kununurra and Wyndham.

General household waste can be disposed of free of charge at both facilities. Fees may apply to other waste types.

What can I take to landfill?

General household waste includes:

• Food scraps and household rubbish
• Plastic bags and soft plastics
• Disposable nappies
• Polystyrene and foam packaging
• Broken ceramics, crockery and drinking glasses
• Clothing and textiles that cannot be reused
• Garden and green waste

This is not a complete list. Some materials may need to be separated or disposed of in designated areas.
