Improving Safety and Connectivity for the Kununurra Community
The Shire of Wyndham East Kimberley advises that Lakeview Drive will be closed to all traffic from 6:30am to 4:30pm on weekdays, commencing Tuesday 3 June 2025, as part of vital road upgrade works. Preliminary works are already underway.
This closure is necessary to facilitate a road widening project aimed at improving safety and connectivity for residents and visitors. The works are part of the Black Spot Program, following the road’s identification as a high-risk area due to narrow lanes, inadequate lighting, poor road formation, and a lack of pedestrian facilities. During peak tourist seasons, the road is heavily trafficked by vehicles, caravans, trucks, and pedestrians accessing Discovery Parks – Lake Kununurra, Lake Kununurra Golf Club, and The Pump House Restaurant.
Traffic Management and Detours
To ensure public safety and continued access to key destinations, a Traffic Management Plan (TMP) will be implemented, including:
- Detours for light vehicles via the western side of the M1 Channel for access to the Discovery Caravan Park, Pump House Restaurant, and Golf Course.
- Lakeview Drive will be closed to all public traffic during work hours, with access restricted to construction equipment only.
- Trucks delivering materials will access Lakeview Drive via Victoria Highway, turning around past the caravan park entrance and exiting the same way.
- Vehicles over 8 tonnes will require supervised access via Lakeview Drive due to weight limitations on the Pumphouse bridge (M1 gate)during work hours.
- Detours will operate weekdays only, between 6:30am and 4:30pm. Outside of these hours, normal access via Lakeview Drive will resume.
Variable message boards will be in place along the Victoria Highway to inform motorists of detour routes and road access updates.
Parking Changes
Please note that regular parking for The Pumphouse will be closed during the works. Alternative parking arrangements will be clearly signposted.
