Today, the Shire of Wyndham East Kimberley officially opened the new Kununurra Shared Loop Footpath at the Intersection of Coolibah Drive and Messmate Way. Shire President David Menzel officially opened the path with a cutting of a ribbon.
The Footpath program is part of the Shire’s Asset Construction Program that focuses on providing safe and accessible footpaths for all community members.
Cr David Menzel said that the primary focus of the path was to safely link the Kununurra Schools with residential areas.
“This new pathway addresses parents’ concerns, who have been reluctant to allow their children to cycle to school due to safety concerns,” said Cr Menzel
“It is pleasing to see many school children on bicycles using the footpath and we are looking forward to seeing more community members utilising it to its full extent”.
Cr Menzel further revealed that this was only stage 1 of 3 on the Kununurra Shared Pathway Loop project.
“Stage two will involve connecting Ironwood Drive with the Schools, OVAHs and Aboriginal Communities of Bethnal, Mirima and Nullywah,” said Cr Menzel
Budget has also been set aside for signage and landscaping to add to the amenity of the footpath network.
The Shire would like to thank the Department of Transport’s WA Regional Bike Network for their assistance in jointly funding the project.
