Kimberley residents and travellers are being urged to protect themselves against mosquito bites, following the first Murray Valley encephalitis (MVE) detection in the region this year. The Department of Health warning follows MVE virus being found in sentinel chicken flocks in the east Kimberley during the wet season.

Residents and travellers in the Kimberley region are being urged to take extra precautions to avoid mosquito bites after Murray Valley encephalitis (MVE) was reported in an individual residing in the West Kimberley. Department of Health Acting Managing Scientist, Craig Brockway, said this was the first human case of MVE reported in Western Australia since 2018. The patient is now recovering.

Local residents will now pay no more than $299 for a one-way flight when booked as a return flight. The State Government has committed $19.8 million to deliver on this election promise and has consulted extensively with regional communities and airlines to support regional aviation.

The Department of Health is warning residents and travellers in the Kimberley region to take precautions to avoid mosquito bites, following heavy rainfall, flooding and the first evidence of Kunjin virus activity this season. Since the beginning of January, large parts of the Kimberley have received above-average wet-season rainfall that has resulted in flooding and an increase in mosquito-borne virus activity.

On 13 January 2022, the State Government announced that as part of the WA Safe Transition Plan to reopen WA’s borders, proof of vaccination will now be required to enter certain facilities from 31 January 2022. This will directly affect Shire facilities such as the Kununurra Leisure Centre and Peter Reid Memorial Hall. Any patrons aged 16 and over who enter the abovementioned facilities will be required to provide proof of vaccination, this includes members and anyone who wishes to hire Shire facilities.
